"A Declaration on the Lasallian educational mission? What does it have to say?

Last summer saw the publication of a text entitled "Declaration on the Lasallian Educational Mission". It is the fruit of work carried out by the International Council for the Lasallian Educational Mission, a body made up of Brothers and lay people, women and men, representing the 5 Regions of the Institute corresponding to the 5 continents.

Here are a few key points to consider

  • The aim of the text is to clarify for our time the particular features of the three-century-long Lasallian adventure , which as aresult of unforeseen expansion has taken root in cultural universes far removed from its origins .That's why this Declaration is structured around 4 chapters: a rereading of history in order to clarify what this one has given rise to and what it leaves us; a presentation of the various current players in the missionofthe Lasallianmission; a vision of its future.
  • Since the Lasallian network has a global dimension ,this Declaration is intended to reach out to men and womenof many different cultures, religions and languages, without obscuring its Christian roots .Forthis reason,it should be read with an open mind and heart, encouraging an effort to understand when the text does not immediately relate to our own situation or sensibility.
  • This text is not intended to be the expression of a beautiful theory or a dream. By presenting the historical, human, educational and pedagogical universe outlined by the particular features of the Lasallian experience, it echoes the major human, societal and cultural issues of today's world .It isalso nourished, without naming them , by experiences, projects and achievements on five continents and shared in various national and international bodies.
  • Finally, higher education is very much a part of it, and its development is undoubtedly one of the outstanding phenomena of the last 50 years, even if its origins are more distant. The 120 years of ECAM-La Salle bear witness to this.

The text ends with a statement of 12 convictions which I believe will be shared by all those who feel

LaSallienne adventure, and who can give meaning to their actions.

Happy reading for individuals and, why not, for groups.
