Why develop Small Modular Reactors (SMRs)?

By Françoise TERNON-MORIN

Tuesday November 22 at 5.45pm at ECAM Lyon

40 Montée St Barthélémy Lyon 5° France

Against a backdrop of growing demand for electricity, small modular reactors (or SMRs) - typically less than 300 MWe in size - are helping to expand the range of nuclear power plants available to complement high-power reactors. These simpler products can meet the needs of countries lacking robust electricity grids, powering isolated sites and offering multiple uses such as district heating, desalination or decarbonated hydrogen production.

At present, the SMR market is still unclear, but projects abound in terms of both reactor size and technology. The most mature models are pressurized water reactors, including the French NUWARD TM project, designed by a consortium led by EDF.

We'll end the presentation with some information on this project, which is scheduled to be prototyped in France around 2030, before being offered for export.

Françoise TERNON-MORIN is a graduate of the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Mines de Saint Etienne. She has spent her entire career at EDF, first in an R&D center, then in engineering at SEPTEN, now the Technical Division, in Lyon. In her last position, she was in charge of international monitoring of new reactor models (including SMRs).

She is currently an active member of the French Nuclear Energy Society (SFEN).
